Troubleshooting
Having issues? Find solutions to common problems below.
Connection Issues
My Muse won’t appear in the device list
- Make sure your Muse is turned on (hold power button until LEDs light up)
- Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your computer
- Check that your Muse isn’t connected to another app (like the Muse app on your phone)
- Try turning your Muse off and on again
- Make sure you’re using Chrome, Edge, or Opera (Safari and Firefox don’t support Web Bluetooth)
Connection keeps dropping or disconnecting
- Move closer to your computer (Bluetooth range is typically 10 meters)
- Remove any obstacles between your headband and computer
- Close other Bluetooth devices that might cause interference
- Make sure your Muse battery is sufficiently charged
- Try restarting your browser
“Web Bluetooth Not Supported” error
- Web Bluetooth only works in Chrome, Edge, and Opera browsers
- Safari, Firefox, and mobile browsers are not supported
- Download the Flocus desktop app for the best experience
- Make sure your browser is up to date
Wrong protocol detected (Classic vs Athena)
- Click “Advanced Settings” in the connection modal
- Manually select the correct protocol for your device
- Muse 2 and most Muse S devices use Classic protocol
- Some newer Muse S Gen 2 devices use Athena protocol
- If unsure, try both protocols to see which one connects successfully
Signal Quality
Sensors showing poor signal (red/yellow indicators)
- Adjust the headband position on your forehead
- Make sure the sensors are making direct contact with skin
- Move hair away from the sensor contact points
- Slightly dampen the sensors with water for better conductivity
- Tighten the headband slightly for better contact
Ear sensors not connecting
- The reference sensors should rest behind your ears, touching skin
- Adjust the headband so ear sensors make firm contact
- Clean the ear sensors if they appear dirty
- Try slightly moistening the ear sensors
Signal quality fluctuates during session
- Avoid excessive head movement during your session
- Make sure the headband isn’t too loose
- Check that sweat isn’t interfering with sensor contact
- Sit in a comfortable position to minimize movement
Session Issues
Calibration takes too long or never completes
- Sit as still as possible during calibration
- Make sure signal quality is good before starting
- Avoid eye movements and blinking excessively
- Try relaxing your facial muscles
- If it still fails, try disconnecting and reconnecting your Muse
Flow score seems inaccurate
- EEG readings vary based on many factors including sleep, caffeine, and stress
- Give the system a few sessions to learn your patterns
- Make sure signal quality is consistently good throughout your session
- Try different times of day to see when your focus is naturally better
Session didn’t save
- Sessions shorter than 10 seconds are not saved
- Check your internet connection if you’re logged in
- Sessions are saved locally even offline and sync when you’re back online
- Try refreshing the page and checking your session history
Free tier session limit reached
- Free tier allows one 30-minute session per day
- Wait until the next day for your session to reset
- Upgrade to Pro for unlimited sessions
App & Account
Can’t log in to my account
- Make sure you’re using the correct email address
- Use the “Forgot your password?” link on the sign-in page to reset it
- Check your spam folder for verification emails
- Try logging in with Google if you originally signed up that way
- Clear your browser cache and try again
Sessions not syncing across devices
- Make sure you’re logged in on both devices
- Check your internet connection
- Pull down to refresh on the sessions page
- Sessions sync automatically but may take a few moments
Desktop app won’t launch
- Make sure you downloaded the correct version for your OS (Mac or Windows)
- On Mac, you may need to right-click and select “Open” the first time
- Check that your antivirus isn’t blocking the app
- Try downloading and reinstalling the app
Pomodoro Mode
Pomodoro notifications not appearing
- Check that desktop notifications are enabled in your browser
- On Mac, make sure notifications are allowed in System Preferences > Notifications
- On Windows, check notification settings in Settings > System > Notifications
- Make sure the Flocus tab is not muted in your browser
Timer doesn’t match my expected intervals
- Custom Pomodoro settings can be configured before starting a session
- Flow Extensions may automatically extend work intervals when you’re in deep flow
- Fatigue detection may suggest earlier breaks when you’re cognitively strained
- These adaptive features are designed to optimize your productivity
