Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Flocus and flow state tracking.

Getting Started

What is Flocus?

Flocus is a flow state tracking app that uses EEG data from your Muse headband to measure and visualize your focus in real-time. It helps you understand when you're in flow, overloaded, or disengaged, so you can optimize your work sessions.

What hardware do I need?

Flocus works with all Muse headbands, including the original Muse, Muse 2, and Muse S (Gen 1 and Gen 2). These are consumer-grade EEG devices that connect via Bluetooth. You can purchase them from the Muse website or Amazon.

What browsers are supported?

Flocus requires Web Bluetooth, which is supported in Chrome, Edge, and Opera on desktop. Safari and Firefox do not support Web Bluetooth. For the best experience, we recommend using the Flocus desktop app for Mac or Windows.

Does Flocus work on mobile?

No, Flocus requires a desktop computer with Bluetooth. Mobile browsers don't support the Web Bluetooth API needed to connect to your Muse headband. You can browse our website on mobile, but you'll need a desktop to use the app.

Flow Tracking

How does Flocus detect flow states?

Flocus analyzes your brainwave patterns using the theta/beta ratio, which is scientifically associated with focused attention and flow states. We combine this with fatigue detection and trend analysis to give you a real-time flow score from 0-100.

What do the different states mean?

Flow (green) means you're in an optimal state of focused attention. Overload (red) indicates cognitive strain—you may need a break. Low Engagement (blue) suggests you're not fully engaged with your task. Your goal is to maximize time in flow.

How long does calibration take?

Calibration takes about 30 seconds. During this time, sit still and relax while Flocus establishes your baseline brain activity. This baseline is used to personalize your flow detection throughout the session.

Why is my flow score different each session?

Your brain state varies based on sleep, stress, caffeine, time of day, and many other factors. Flocus calibrates at the start of each session to account for these variations, so your flow score reflects your current cognitive state.

Pomodoro Mode

What is Pomodoro mode?

Pomodoro mode structures your work into timed intervals (default 25 minutes) followed by short breaks. Flocus adapts the traditional Pomodoro technique with EEG data—extending work intervals when you're in flow and suggesting earlier breaks when you're fatigued.

Can I customize the work/break durations?

Yes! Before starting a session, click the settings icon next to the Pomodoro toggle to customize work duration (15-60 min), short break duration (3-15 min), and long break duration (10-30 min).

What are Flow Extensions?

When you're in deep flow at the end of a work interval, Flocus can automatically extend your session rather than interrupting you. This is one of the key benefits of EEG-enhanced Pomodoro tracking.

Subscription & Pricing

Can I try before I buy?

Absolutely! The free tier gives you one 30-minute session per day, forever. No credit card required. This is enough to experience flow tracking and decide if it works for you.

What do I get with Pro?

Pro gives you unlimited session duration and unlimited sessions per day. You also get full access to historical analytics, insights, and all future features we add.

Is there a money-back guarantee?

Yes! If you're not satisfied with Pro within the first 30 days, we'll refund your payment in full. No questions asked.

Can I cancel my subscription anytime?

Yes, you can cancel at any time from your account settings. Your Pro access will continue until the end of your billing period, then you'll return to the free tier.

Do you offer team or enterprise plans?

Not yet, but we're working on it. Contact us at josh@flocus.org if you're interested in using Flocus for your team.

Technical

Is my brain data private?

Yes. Your EEG data is processed locally in your browser and is never sent to our servers. Only aggregated session metrics (flow score, duration, etc.) are stored if you create an account, and you can delete your data at any time.

Why won't my Muse connect?

Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your computer, your Muse is charged and turned on, and you're using a supported browser (Chrome, Edge, or Opera). If you're still having trouble, try restarting your Muse by holding the power button for 10 seconds.

What's the difference between Classic and Athena protocol?

These are two different Bluetooth protocols used by Muse devices. Most Muse 2 and Muse S devices use the Classic protocol. Some newer Muse S (Gen 2) devices use Athena. Flocus auto-detects the correct protocol, but you can override it in Advanced Settings if needed.

Can I export my session data?

Currently, you can view all your session data in the app. Full data export functionality is on our roadmap.
