Getting Started with Flocus

Set up your flow tracking in minutes. Here's everything you need to know.

Get Your Hardware

You'll need a Muse headband to use Flocus.

Flocus works with all Muse EEG headbands:

  • Muse 2 - Most popular, great for beginners
  • Muse S (Gen 1 & Gen 2) - Comfortable fabric design
  • Original Muse - Still fully supported

You can purchase a Muse headband from choosemuse.com or Amazon.

Set Up Your Browser

Make sure you're using a supported browser with Bluetooth.

Flocus requires Web Bluetooth to connect to your Muse. Supported browsers:

Create Your Account

Sign up to save your sessions and track progress over time.

While you can try Flocus without an account, creating one lets you:

  • Save your session history
  • View analytics and insights
  • Sync data across devices
  • Upgrade to Pro for unlimited sessions

Connect Your Muse

Pair your headband with Flocus via Bluetooth.

To connect your Muse:

  1. Make sure your Muse is charged and turned on (hold button until LEDs light up)
  2. Enable Bluetooth on your computer
  3. Go to the Session page
  4. Click "Connect Device" and select your Muse from the list
  5. Wait for the connection to establish (status turns green)
Tip

Make sure your Muse isn't connected to the Muse app on your phone. Only one device can connect at a time.

Position Your Headband

Good sensor contact is essential for accurate readings.

For best results:

  • Place the headband on your forehead, sensors resting above your eyebrows
  • The reference sensors should touch behind your ears
  • Adjust until signal quality indicators show green
  • Move hair away from sensor contact points
  • If signal is poor, slightly dampen the sensors with water

The signal quality indicator will show you which sensors have good contact. All four should be green for optimal tracking.

Start Your First Session

Begin tracking your flow state.

Once connected, your session begins automatically after a brief calibration:

  1. Calibration (30 seconds) - Sit still and relax while Flocus establishes your baseline
  2. Active Tracking - Work normally while Flocus monitors your flow state
  3. Review - End your session to see detailed metrics and insights
Optional: Pomodoro Mode

Toggle Pomodoro mode before calibration to structure your session with work/break intervals. Flocus will adapt the intervals based on your flow state.

Understanding Your Flow Score

Flow

Optimal focus and engagement. You're in the zone!

Neutral

Normal working state. Good, but room for deeper focus.

Overload

Cognitive strain detected. Consider taking a break.

Low Engagement

Mind wandering or disengaged. Try a more challenging task.
